How To Win a Poker Tournament

Author: Tom Shannahan

Poker tournaments are marathons, not sprints. To come out on top of a multi-table tournament, you need to have patience, endurance and an open schedule. Poker tournaments require dedicated focus for extend periods of time. If you enter a casino or an online poker room, you better be in a comfortable state of mind and you better be prepared.

Tournament players perfect their craft by practicing. Experience is the most powerful weapon that a tournament player can bring to the table. Players with experience play with more confidence. They approach the game with a been-there-done-that sort of attitude. When youve had the chance to experience different sorts of players reacting in various kinds of situations, you develop a natural tendency to feel like you know more than the player next to you.

Look at Phil Hellmuths approach for example. No one can argue about the mans poker skillshes won nine WSOP bracelets. Phils a professional player who honestly feels like he understands more about the game of poker than any other human being alive. Love him or hate him, his experience and his expertise are his strongest attributes. You dont have to play cocky to win a tournament, but you have to have confidence in your ability to be more comfortable with the game than the other players at your table.

Practice is the key. Build up your abilities. Read books by the pros and check out reviews of online poker rooms. Poker is game that has to be personal. You need to develop your own style based on your own experiences. Once youve practiced and gained confidence in your poker skills, there are few additional tips to keep in mind about tournaments play.

At the beginning of a tournament, play patiently and realize that you have a long way to go. Often times players start off strong, but then after a couple hours they either get distracted or start to lose interest. Pace yourself at the beginning and err on the side of caution. Save your aggressive game for later on.

Wait for good cards. Dont feel obligated to play every round and dont chase after low probability hands. If you think you might be beat, let it go. Survive the early stages first and get your revenge later on. Dont pay to see cards if youve got a weak hand and dont start stealing blinds until later in the game.

If youve developed a chip lead, be aggressive with your big stack and force other players out of hands. You still need to be smart though. You can make a big raise thatll force a fold, but you dont have to go all in with every hand. If your stack is dwindling quick, you need to shift tactics away from a cautious approach and toward a more maniacal style. As you get further into the tournament, your style of play should be much less conservative, especially when faced with a big pot.

In the final stages of the tournament, you should be mixing up your style of play. Dont be predictable in your approach. Keep your opponents guessing. Play some bad hands, try some bluffs, use the opportunities that your opponents give you and to whatever you can to finish in the money.
